Every time I see a monarch butterfly or a bluebird in my yard, I feel comforted by my dear friend Vickie whom I know is close by. We worked at building monarch gardens in our yards. Then she and Monty become prolific bluebird people with several broods hatching a year! So we tried too! This spring, driving on 6th street I noticed the iris in the south garden at the Presbyterian Church, still thriving from a spring Vickie was "putzing around in the garden" where she had dug up iris bulbs. She gave some to me to plant there as I was helping with the church garden that spring. So, when you see them in the spring, know they came from Monty and Vickie's house on Preston. We shared so many life events together during our 35 year friendship, laughing, crying, cheering and even ranting on occasion (if you can even picture that of her. . . her rants were WAY more moderate than mine. .. ). Vickie always knew when someone needed a boost. or just out and out help! Like the time when I had gone back to OSU for more education and had to walk everywhere on campus, THEN had knee surgery on my left knee. No big deal, except I drove a stick-shift car! Lucky for me, she knew how to drive one and had an automatic, so, we switched cars!! With a handicap sticker and her car, I was back in business. Vickie was one of the first to welcome us when we moved to Stillwater. She was always interested in how you and your family were doing and genuinely cared for everyone. I just wanted to let you know that we were thinking about you Monty. As you know we loved Vicki and always enjoyed our time with her. One particular time stands out to me... when we came over to your house in Country Club for Supper Club. She had been diagnosed and you were in the process of transforming the house to accommodate her needs. We ordered Hideaway Pizza just to make it a little easier since the house was being renovated. We ate on paper plates and used plastic silverware, again to limit how much clean up needed to be done after the meal. It was one of the best Supper Club's to date, because we were able to focus all of the attention on each other and the conversation instead of the meal and cleaning it up. Thank you so much for opening your home during that difficult time so that we had the chance to look into your lives and get to know you all better. There was great conversations and stories told that night. We laughed at so many different things and we really enjoyed ourselves. Love you and you are in our prayers. Tommy and Rachel Shreffler

Thinking of Vicki's family. A year goes by so quickly and seems a bit unreal, so I wanted to share this story about Vicki. Living next door to Monty and Vicki Karns and getting to know them has been such a wonderful blessing!!! I remember one day when I was mowing in our back yard. (My husband Jim and I both like to mow for the exercise, so he mows front and sides and I mow the back.) I had on a straw hat and jeans and a plaid shirt and looked like a sad old woman workin’ out on the “back 40” (as in the back 40 acres; that’s how we said it years ago on the farm where I grew up in Kingfisher County). I was mowing and was sweating profusely in our unfriendly Oklahoma heat and humidity. I glanced to my right and saw Vicki sitting on her patio. She looked beautiful as always, dressed just right for the hot day but looking completely cool and youthful! Her lawn was beautifully landscaped and inviting. I turned off my mower and walked over to say hello and of course in no time at all we were chatting and laughing as always. It is such a joy to be her neighbor. I think many people have heard how she brought the neighborhood ladies together - first invited us to her house for coffee, then established a monthly coffee and sharing time in her beautiful home that spread to other homes with even more friends. She and her home spoke love and hospitality and she was so good at showing how she cared about us all. As we grew to know each other and shared laughter and tears, we all knew how this precious group of friends came to be. It all started at the Karns home. What a joy! My love to all of you!
