Story shared: Christmas with the Nearly and Newly Weds

It was with mixed feelings that I heard of Jeane’s day of celebration. Although I haven’t seen this Lady for a while, all I have to do is close my eyes to recall the beauty, the zest, the tenacity, and the smile that was so much a part of her continuous expression of life. I found strength in my difficult times from her influence and encouragement offered from her own hard fought foundation of courageous faith. I believe my preaching and teaching found new depths from her presence in the sanctuary. When Linda and I had the privilege of being learning-leaders in the Nearly and Newly Marrieds, there were times our plates were full. One such season came as we approached Christmas not long after an extended hospital stay. We had thought about cancelling our Christmas dinner but had not made the final decision. This precious Lady called and said she and Kyle would like to host the class and have the Christmas party at their home! The class was so excited. With no time for planning, we decided on potluck. I was thinking “Really?” University students, end of the semester, student loan leftovers already committed for “gotta”have gifts – and now POTLUCK ... at the YATES? Along with Steve and Ruth Owens, we provided the meat,and dessert. Our gracious hosts provided drinks and various breads plus had decorated the home beautifully for over 30. Jeane had suggested the students just bring salads and vegetables. They did. Lettuce in cellophane. Vegetables in cans. We microwaved what veggies we had and sent to the store for other prepared items. As I opened some cans, Jeane found some bowls. At one point she looked at me with that beautiful smile and signature twinkle in her eye and said, “Next time maybe I should share instructions with my suggestions.” My reply was, “This is awesome, I have never known you to overlook any possibility.”:) While the kitchen crew was assembling Christmas dinner, Kyle was entertaining the group as he told the story behind each of the 30 nativity scenes they had collected. It all turned out to be a marvelous evening. One that would not be forgotten. Few members of the class ever knew what happened in the kitchen. What was remembered was how they were hosted by THE DRs.JEANE AND KYLE YATES. She was on a high pedestal for those young ladies and we heard many conversations about how she who was greatest among them became servant of all. She impressed them as an example of how you can achieve your own potential and still have a balanced marriage. They displayed the joy and pleasure of being married and sharing life when you commit it to the Lord, having committed yourselves to each other. Thank you for sharing this delightful, bright, challenging, wonderful Lady with us!
