Obituary for Wendell James Morton

Wendell James Morton passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at the age of 83. His celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Perkins First United Methodist Church. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on March 3, 1935 and spent his childhood in Wewoka. He entered the Navy after graduating from Wewoka High School and served four years on the aircraft carrier The USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. The carrier operated in the Mediterranean area which was on active duty during the Suez crisis. He attended the OSU Institute of Technology where he studied Engineering Technology. He worked for 31 years for the Soil Conservation Service of the USDA from which he retired in 1990.
He met his future wife, Becky Burdette, in Stillwater where she was attending Veterinary college at OSU. They were married in December 1972 and had one daughter, Kerry Morton, who was born in 1985.
Wendell loved spending time with his family and could be found always telling his famous stories that we will miss hearing so much. He enjoyed any opportunity to cheer on his OSU Cowboys and Thunder. He loved going to the First United Methodist Church of Perkins to visit with his church family. He loved being outdoors and was very happy anytime he was able to garden, go fishing, play with his dogs or tinker in the garage. He was always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it and always had a smile and a kind word to share.
Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Garnet Morton.
Wendell is survived by his wife, Rebecca Morton, one daughter, Kerry Morton and future son-in-law William Schmidt; one sister, Charlie Morton Young; one brother, and sister-in-law Ralph and Dalphy Morton; nieces and great niece Kim Turney, Stacy Morton and Kirstie Turney, as well as multiple cousins and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Perkins First United Methodist Church.
